Winter Fun

Hi there!  We are back in the groove after a wonderful winter break.
Some things to know/remember:
  • Friday, January 17th is an early dismissal at 11:25.  There will be NO TROJAN TRIUMPH that afternoon.
  • There will be no school on Monday, January 20th in observation of Martin Luther King Day.
  • No Trojan Triumph on Monday, January 27th.
  • Every year that I have taught kindergarten my rule has always been that I stop tying shoes after Christmas.  We have quite a few "shoe tying experts" that help their classmates, but there are still a lot of kids who are unable to tie.  Please practice this skill at home.
  • We are still collecting boxtops!  The competition isn't over until April.... so keep sending them in! :)
  • If we have no more snow days between now and then 100's day will be on Monday, January 27th.  100's day is a huge deal in kindergarten!  I will be sending home ziploc bags the week before asking for 100 snacks for our combined 100's day snack (100 M&M's, 100 Cheerios, 100 pretzels, 100 gummy worms, etc.) so be looking for that.  I would also LOVE a few volunteers for that morning to help with a few 100's day activities I have planned.  If you can volunteer between 9:30 and 10:45 that morning that would be amazing.  Just let me know! Thank you in advance!
Literacy
I cannot stress the importance of the high-frequency "sight words" enough.  Mastering these words really make a HUGE difference as your child reads.  Please help our child with these words:

I, a, go, big, at, the, can, to, am, we, my, like, make, yes, on, out, be, ran, you, no, get, by, have, not, do, so, see, have, you, all, what, little, play, for, look, it

We have started learning the comprehension skill of "connecting."  The students have been making connections to books we read, as well as pictures.  There are two types of connections that access children's background knowledge:  1.  A connection that reminds the children of something they have seen or done.  2.  A connection where the children already know something about the topic.  We also continue to revisit predicting and summarizing. :)

Math
Addition is the name of the game!  Our daily math journal has really been amazing when it comes to addition; so many wonderful problems!!!  In our math series we have begun addition as well.  I am very impressed with the level of understanding children are exhibiting right now.  I would love, love, love it if you could practice counting to 100 with your child every day.  If your child already knows how to count to 100, have them start at 100 and count to 200! :)

Thank you to all of the wonderful parents who helped to make our Christmas Party so wonderful!  You all are the best! :)  Look at all of the cuties below having a blast!!

OPENING OUR GIFTS!!!!

Thank you to everyone for all of the wonderful gifts you gave me!  I am blessed to be a part of your child's life and I appreciated your thoughtfulness in thinking of me at Christmas time. <3

This week we've been finishing up our Winter unit.  We made a snowman glyph!  The snowman's arms had to be up if they have built a snowman before, down if they haven't.  The number of buttons were supposed to be the number of kids that live in their house.  Their hat is their favorite color.  They did a great job following directions during this activity!

During phonemic awareness time we play a game where we move chips as we say sounds.  The kids are getting good at this.  :)

We also went fishing for beginning sounds!!!! So fun.

Until next time!!
