We are 100 Days Smarter!

What crazy weather lately!  I am SO READY for winter to be over!!  Despite being postponed, the 100th day of school was a blast!  I have a ton of pictures later on in the post.  Thanks so much to the volunteers that came in!  It would have been hard to do without you!!  :)

Some things to know/remember:
  • Valentines Day is sneaking right up on us.  Early next week I will be sending home a class list so that your child can get his/her Valentine's ready.  The party will be on Friday, February 14th, at 2:00.  :)  I will send out reminder notes to those of you who are signed up to bring something. :)
  • There will be no school on Monday, February 17th in observance of President's day.
  • Keep practicing tying shoes with your child!
  • We are still collecting boxtops!  The competition isn't over until April.... so keep sending them in! :)
  • Parent/Teacher Conferences are the evening of Thursday, Feb. 20th and the morning/early afternoon of Friday, Feb. 21st.  School will be dismissed at 2:00 that Thursday and there will be no school that Friday.  I have signed up everyone that returned conference slips for a conference and am sending them home for approval.  If you decided not to have a conference and change your mind, just let me know.  I would be happy to meet with you. :)
  • On Friday, March 14th we are planning a huge "beach party" for the culmination of a unit on oceans.  This will be done with the whole kindergarten.  We have done this in the past and it is so much fun!!  There is already a parent in Mrs. Parker's class that is willing to be the leader in the planning of this event (with the teachers) but we are looking for volunteers for this big party. We will be having a meeting after Valentine's day with all of the volunteers- I will let you know about the date/time soon.  Please let me know if you are interested in helping with this.  The more parents we have, the better.  Also, your child will be so proud.  Even if you can't come, if you can help in other ways, that would be awesome.  Just send me a note or e-mail if I can add you to the list. :)
Literacy
Our new sight words are bolded.  Keep practicing!!

I, a, go, big, at, the, can, to, am, we, my, like, make, yes, on, out, be, ran, you, no, get, by, have, not, do, so, see, have, you, all, what, little, play, for, look, it, he, me, is, good, say, in, come

We are continuing our comprehension strand of connecting.  Soon we will start our new strand of "questioning."  The kids are doing such a good job making awesome connections!!  I am proud of how the kids are coming-- there are not too many more letters that have to be mastered.  We are really working hard on blending words together!!  Guided reading time is continuing, but during that time I have been focusing on specific skill-sets that your child is in need of.  Some groups are reading books, some groups are working on letters, blending, etc.  Just be aware of what your child is bringing home. If you see the guided reading book baggie, have your child read it twice.  If you don't see it, it means that your child was working on other pre-reading skills. :)

Math
We have started subtraction!  Addition will not be forgotten and we will revisit it daily!  Mastery is the name of the game when it comes to the Common Core.  Ask your child to sing "If you subtract with a pirate."  It is super cute.  Are you working on counting to 100 with your child?  Every child is expected to count to 100 by the end of the year.  Some can, and I have been practicing having them count to 200. Some children can't yet count to 50.  Please practice with your child, wherever they may be. :)

The kids started the day out by finding this little treat at their table.  I'm so proud of all they've accomplished in the first 100 days. <3

There were 100's hanging all over our room!

Walking through the door was a hit! :)
