Our Five Senses

The five sense are so important; and it is always such a fun unit to teach!  We did a TON of activities, some of which I did not get pics of, but take a look at some of the things we did! :)

We read some amazing books.  Here were some of our favorites!  Hello, Red Fox by the one and only Eric Carle was BY FAR their favorite.  We read it the day we learned about sight.  It is so cool!  You stare at a dot on the animal, and then when you turn your eyes to the next page the animal appears before your eyes, but in the complementary color on the color wheel.  They LOVED it!

Can you guess what sense we are testing here?  Yep, touch!  Despite the looks on their faces, I promise I didn't have anything too ooey, gooey, sticky, or slimy in there! :)

 We also made a book about the sense of touch.  They had to glue 5 different feeling objects in their book and then write what they felt like.

You know about my addiction to file folder games, right?  Well, I made some neat ones to go along with our five senses unit.  The sweeties enjoyed them. :)

The sense that the kids seemed to enjoy learning about the most was the sense of taste.  We used this sheet to help us document the tastes of our tongue:

                            

They wrote the taste, then we tasted that taste.... then they had to rate the taste on a scale of 1-5.  Whew, that was a lot of the word "taste!" :))) They had SO MUCH FUN with this activity.  Of course, bitter was rated the worst!  I had them taste bitter chocolate.  Yucky.  Sweet = gummy bears, salty = potato chip, and sour = lemon.  The number of kids that loved the lemon and ate it to the peel absolutely shocked me!  **cringe**  :)

 The sense of smell was fun also.  I had the kids close their eyes and I walked around with different items for them to smell.  They then had to write down what they thought they smelled.  This little girl thought she smelled tacos, perfume, peppermint candy, an orange, and soap.  I LOVE the sounds they are hearing in the words! :)

For the sense of hearing I played sound clips and they had do discuss what they thought the sound was.  Some of them were hard, like the waterfall.... and some of them were easy..... like the police siren.  :)

We are officially done with our math unit on subtraction.  Yay!  Wow, did they do awesome!  We are starting a unit on money.... so start practicing identifying and adding change at home.  That will help out a lot at school.  

This week we are finishing up our human body and dental unit.  Next week we are doing an amazing author study on some great authors like Mo Willems, Eric Carle, Audrey Wood, Jan Brett, and of course Dr. Seuss. :)
