Jamberry, Silly Sally, and Caterpillar Fun!

I cannot believe we are in September already!  Time sure does fly!

Some things to know/remember:
  • Please remember that letters Q and U are getting married this Thursday 9/12/13.  Boys are invited to dress as Quarterbacks (football shirt/jersey) and girls are invited to dress as Queens. :)  It is going to be a blast!!! :)
  • I would like to remind you to please initial the behavior calendar that is in your child's take-home folder each night.
  • We are going to start going to the Trojan Buck Store soon.  Do you have anything laying around your house that your kids are tired of?  Please donate to the Trojan Buck Store.  The Trojan Buck Store has been a wonderful incentive for good behavior for the past few years.  There are no words to express how much the kids love it.  However, the budget is tight this year for buying new things for the store, so any donations you make would be awesome!  It could be anything kid friendly and fun!
  • Please collect BOXTOPS for our classroom!  We can win a party if we bring in the most! :) Ask grandma, grandpa, aunts, uncles, etc. to help out too! :)
  • The book fair is this week.  If you send money with your child for the book fair please put it in an envelope labeled with what the money is for and I will make sure they make it down to select their books.  We are going down as a class on Thursday afternoon so that would be an ideal day to send money.
  • Thank you to all of the grandparents that attended Grandparents Day!  Unfortunately I had outside morning duty so I was unable to make it down, but it looked like a great turnout!
  • We have a NEW STUDENT.  I am asking for one more snack at snack time, so please adjust the number of snacks on your snack calendar to 25 snacks.  Thanks!  Also, if you are in need of another snack calendar please let me know!
  • School PICTURE DAY is this Wednesday, September 11th!  I can't wait to see how cute the kids are going to look! :)
  • Thank you SO SO MUCH to the parents who volunteered to cut out File Folder Games!  Your help is greatly appreciated!  Any other takers?? :)
  • Be on the lookout for our second class book, "Silly School Kids."  Please remember to send the class books back to school the day after you get them, if possible. :)

WHAT WE'VE BEEN LEARNING:

Language Arts
The kids have been fully immersed in our two Phonemic Awareness programs:  Heggerty Phonemic Awareness and Road to the Code.  We are learning and practicing so many things daily.  Rhyming, identifying the beginning and ending sounds in words, and isolating sounds are being focused on currently.  Last week we focused on letter Ss and letter Jj.  Please ask your child to show you the visual phonics sign that goes with these letters... and to sing the songs if they can. :)  In writing we are beginning shared writing and discussing capital letters in the beginning of a sentence and the different types of punctuation there are.  We will begin writing in our writing journal soon!  PLEASE, please practice these sight words at home with your child:

I, a, go, big, at, the, can, to, am, we, my, like, make

Math
Each day we do a page in a monthly math journal.  This journal hits all of the Common Core State Standards and it is a wonderful activity the children enjoy doing.  This past week our journal focused on positions of objects (above, on, under, etc.) and writing and counting numbers 1-5.  We have also been working on patterns; shape patterns, color patters, AAB, ABB, AABB, AB and ABC patterns. Busy busy!!

Some other things we've been doing:

We read and sang "Jamberry" by Bruce Degen!!  What a fun book that is filled with RHYMES!!!  Then we TASTE TESTED three types of Jams!

This picture CRACKS ME UP.  I don't think she liked that flavor much! :)

SO CUTE.... don't think he's a fan....actually, this little cutie did not like jam at all if I recall correctly and when it came time to pick our favorite he said "none" so I had to have him pick the one that he thought was the "least disgusting".  Love it! :) :)

After we tasted all of them we collected our data of our favorite kinds on a tally chart, graphed our data on a bar graph, and figured out what we liked the MOST and LEAST.  What an action packed math activity!

Lastly, we made Jamberry decorations for our classroom! :)

Just a cute picture of kids in the library..... :)

Learning about letter "Ss" was fun!  We were "Word Detectives" and had to find words that contained the letter "Ss" in our classroom and write them down:

We "Read, Buttered, and Colored" our letter Ss book:

And practiced writing the letter Ss:

We listened to "Silly Sally" by Audrey Wood in the listening center:

Then we packed up Sally's Suitcase with words that started with "Ss!"

Then we made a class book called "Silly School Kids" about how they would get to school backwards, just like Silly Sally!

Sorry this is turned!

I would like to introduce...........  TINKERBELL...... our CATERPILLAR!!!!!!!  (The student's named her).  We are so, so excited to hopefully watch Tinkerbell form a Chrysalis and turn into a butterfly!  Stay tuned!  Also, a BIG thank you goes out to Mrs. Piekos for finding Tinkerbell and giving her to our class!!! <3

Of course, we had to watch and read "The Very Hungry Caterpillar" by Eric Carle!

We practiced making patterns with unifex cubes!

We are SILLY(and adorable, and smart, and wonderful)!!!!!! <3

Until next time,
